I was asked to be in a love inspired print show at Revelry gallery... I finally was able to throw something together... i notified the gallery only to find out that the opening was this past saturday. Bummer and... my fault. Well, they were generous enough to allow me to add it to the show since it will be up through the month. I have yet to print any... so i am on the fence whether or not it is worth the effort considering the opening is over.

I ran into my old friend Evan while drinking coffee at Sunergos. We use to print together at Monkey Drive; I have always have had respect for him and a secret desire to design a t-shirt for his band Young Widows. When we spoke at S-gos he filled me in on his life and later he sent me his new record which will be released sometime in the spring.

The record rules! I had to design a t-shirt.

Skulls are nothing new. But, Young Widows has always been able to execute the over done image in new creative cool ways... from such artists as Birder and Derek Snodgrass. For my approach i decided to look to both those artists for inspiration while clearly creating my own style.

In the end i feel like we have an original piece that ties into the Young Widows identity.

The LGDA just had their 21st annual Louisville's 100 best graphic design/illustration/photography awards ceremony.

There were 50-ish graphic design pieces that were accepted into the show out of hundreds-ish.

I recieved 2 (Sojourn vision booklet and the Speaks wedding invite) out of the 14 Golds and 1 Silver (Boyce admissions).

Super humbled and honored by the whole process. I never knew that Louisville had so many Baller designers.

Our dear friends Bradley & Jessica are due for some old-fashioned hitching and they asked my wife and i to be in their wedding and... have the honor to design and direct their wedding invitations. With their much appreciated influence Noel drew this nice wood bark pattern which was screen printed by Ron Jasin. I designed the insert information with the specific intent to have them letter-pressed by our local comrades hound dog press. They look great in person... a truly a wonderful printing process.

this was a suggested logo concept i gave to a friend last year. he owns a business which works along with car dealerships to create data inventory of their product online. the concept here is to show information transforming into data. Data is a shapeless thing and impossible to illustrate, but i feel as though in our cultures mind... if we had to put a shape to data it would be blocky. so we have here an image that imitates a stop light; the red(stop) is information, then turns yellow as transforming, then to green(GO!) once it has achieved data status. it was a perk that these objects arranged such a way that the letter "i" emerged for integradata. my friend didn't go for the concept, but i thought it turn out nice and wanted to share it with you guys.

This is a 20 page book for sojourn community church's mission/vision for the next 10 years. the cover image communicates the idea that the gospel heals and transforms everything through the cross of christ. the first spread is a letter from the pastors, each represented by the exploding envelope on the right (made by michael winters). on the right of the second spread is a collection of items that represent the forming first 5 years of sojourn; the old giving box, the ethiopian cross, quirky photos, etc. the next 2 spreads are graphs representing the need for more workers in the church, and the state of poverty in our immediate area as it relates to home ownership (in hopes of teaching the renting poor how to own their property, and therefore make a investment for their future.) this was by far the biggest project i had worked on up to that point... it turned out great.

some friends of mine recently moved to pearland texas where the decided to open a coffee roasters. we worked pretty closely on this logo to create something classy, sharp, clean, but also cool. the first image is their main logo, and the second image is for stickers, stamps, other more strip down mediums.

first off, Royal is doing very well. he drinks breast milk all day long... all day long. i love him.

since i am taking a short hiatus from design, i thought i might post a job i did for sojourn a couple of months ago which never got used. the work turned out good, but didn't work well with the overall sermon series branding.

the overall job was to create 3 logos that coincided with one another, but uniquely represent the specific portion of the series. the year worth of sermons will work its way through proverbs, psalms, and A.D. (the whole new testament.)

for proverbs i decided to use the image of a scroll. the scroll is what initiated the preservation of these words of wisdom which has passed down generation to generation over the past 2,500 years.

for psalms i decided to follow the theme of a music sheet. the word psalms is contained by the bars of the music sheet, except the letter "m" which is actually in the form of a music note which is being lifted off the music sheet. psalms is a collection of songs in worship of God, so the "m" is being lifted toward heaven.

A.D. was the toughest of this series. how do you represent the whole of the new testament in one image? it wasn't easy, but after much reflection i decided that the new testament would't exist apart from jesus's resurrection. although Jesus' ministry in all was remarkable, it was his resurrection which solidified his identity as God, and therefore began all that took place afterwards. So, the image i chose to use was a picture of Jesus' tomb with the stone rolled away.

hopefully i will have some new work to show you in the next couple of weeks.

ok, its official... this will be my new logo. i have never been totally happy with any of my pedale logos upto this point. for this logo i decided to do another mash up of a traditional german script font. taking things apart and putting them back together has always been an important part of my design; so, naturally i wanted to incorporate that in my brand. for some time i have always been drawn to german letters and i could not remove the idea shown above from my head. i spent about 15 hours over the last 2 weeks tweaking and adjusting the new letter to my specific preference. i made over 50 versions, all a little different from the last. finally, i am happy with this logo and believe it was the most crafted work i have created yet.

a couple of weeks ago i started making shapes at random. i decided to start looking at the shapes i created and see what objects they reminded me of. once i discover the object, i manipulate it fit the shape it reminded me of. this is my first try... i havent really developed the idea, but i am happy with how this first one turned out. the shape below the word is the random shape that i started out with.

This church is going to be planted in richmond virginia, the ninth most dangerous city in the U.S. I attempted to bring a street art culture to the brochure, without losing any momentum with the delivery of text, and without alienating those potential supporters from the burbs... hopefully my street cred goes up a notch with this one.

Making design for yourself is tough. A designer will naturally progress in skill and experience changes in taste. This makes creating a long lasting brand for yourself very difficult. I have always found fault in my logo, website, business cards, etc... Which makes promoting myself impossible; for example, i may have a pocket full of business cards, but i dont like how they look anymore, so they will stay in my pocket.

With that said, i have made a attempt to create a better, hopefully more timeless logo mark for myself. The pictures above shows what that logo would look like on a potential business card. Any comments would be sincerely considered.

this illustration emphasizes the weight of Gods word on jeremiah as he shares very difficult/heavy revelations with israel in jeremiah 26. we too have Gods word through scripture and need to feel the weight of its responsibility; at the same time we need to walk in the freedom of Gods word. We need not be concerned with death, judgment, or a general fear of people, but seek first to do as God commands(which is ultimately for our good)

brooks ritter released his first album a little less then a year ago; the title of the album is "a horse fell lame". the album seeks to express the incomparable God of scripture with a weak insufficient self. i have had this idea in my head for a couple of weeks... its nothing profound as you can see... infact as i was making it i had a moment of reflection. is my purpose in life to make such things as this? i mean... this thing is pretty absurd, but nonetheless i am happy with how it turned out. i am glad to be slowly introducing drawing into my design.

i was asked to make some pieces of art for a proposal my friend is putting together. this piece is called "wrath". i have been looking toward david hockneys early artwork for ispiration. i feel like some of his ideas and elements really came through here. i would like to spend more time, take a group of his work, study it, and recreate more of his ideas and compositions with my own interoperation.

the aspect of art i most enjoy observing is composition and use of space. i like seeing everything in its right place, allthough... i rarely know where that place is, until its put there. i admire those who study composition and have a good explanation of how it works. but for me, i just like spending time adjusting a piece until it feels right.

so i took a light-hearted challenge for myself. i decided that i was going to try to crop/edit/salvage several photographs selected from the 45 photographs i took during my 2 month trip to Guatemala. The camera i used was a Holga(basically a plastic box with a shutter) it was my first time using that type of camera and on my return, after getting the film developed... only a handful of pictures came out the way they were intended to. The rest were a mess of collage exposures, showing only glimpses of the subject.

i enjoy how the edits turned out, and it was a joy for me to experiment with composition on photographs that remind me of many good things.

i hope you guys enjoy them aswell.

This is a art T-shirt for SpendYourself. The tshirt highlights the work that the organization "Life In Abundance" is doing in Kenya; they specifically help orphans find homes within the community, and empower the poor in that area with grass root programs.

ironically my brother left for Sudan yesterday, and he is meeting some of these guys from this organization unrelated to my relationship with them. weird.

this t-shirt was designed by CSDIV. a friend/encourager of mine. Stanley(csdiv) is one of the many influential designers represented in my work. we printed these shirts on brown T's about 2 years ago... i didnt like the shirt choice... so i snagged an extra white T, and printed one for myself. i like it alot.

i have never killed something in my life... it is a totally bizarre and surreal thing.

this past weekend my brother and i spent time at cabin, walking around with shotguns, looking for turkeys. i was successful. after killing it, i had to take it apart and put it on ice. i have a renewed appreciation for meat... death in any form shouldn't be taken lightly, and i intend to savor the meal in which i eat that turkey.

also, i have recieved a few jobs recently... i have been very distracted from design in the past two months... but am working to make more things in the immediate future. so for you that are interested, i should be updating my blog more often.

Missing In Life

i have been living an alternative life for the past week. unfortunately only a week ago (a week after being robbed), i witnessed a murder in the park behind our house. it was shoot and run. noel, jason, kari, and i have been exhausted. the weight of evil in this world has been rocking our faith... i mean shaking the fuck out of our faith. this week has been filled with fear, depression, anxiety, loneliness, and frustration. i have felt totally helpless. i have never prayed more in my life. i feel changed.

do you remember moments when you were a child and something occurred in your life that shook you... that took away apart of your innocence and naivety. you were left with this realization that this very scary thing that you have witnessed has been apart of the fabric of life for a very long time. murder is daily, frequent, and gruesome. i thought that i accreted that truth along time ago... but i hadn't.

my heart is still heavy, but i am convinced that God chose me to witness that atrocity. only 4 days later, i attended a conference through sojourn that surrounded itself with the Gospel and how it applies to the inner city and its problems. i attended a prayer walk with my church around shelby park, i met tons of new people that live in my neighborhood that are affected by this happening. the problems of this inner city, shelby park, and louisville are much bigger then me. i will not turn away from them, but become more humbled by them, that i am small, but God is great.

i plan on designing again this week... trying to transition back into my responsibilities.

everyone on the ground

last night, at 10 pm, 3 men walked into my backyard where my wife, room mates, 5 other friends and i sat around a fire drinking beer and telling jokes. they were carrying guns and yelling to us all to get on the ground and empty our pockets. we did as the asked, they yelled, grabbed and scrambled away. no one was hurt. its hard to find the words to explain such an experience. i did this piece above... as a way of doing something... even if it has no relevance to the problem at large.

for you whom pray. pray that fear does not make a foot hold in any of our lives, pray that we can love our neighborhood and still seek to serve it, not becoming bitter and spiteful to our surroundings, pray that we have peace in our home, that we sleep well, and most importantly that the Gospel be the center of our living.

i have been in a cut/paste/distort mood lately. i am gathering all these different images and making my own images out of them. its a lot of fun for me.

when my friend bradley asked my wife noel and i if we would drive to southern California with him, pick up his girlfriend(to move her to louisville), then turnaround and drive back... we said "of-course", but we only have 5 days to spare. So starting at 11 am friday morning we embarked on a road trip of severe intensity and insanity. we arrived back in louisville tuesday at 2 am. our butts may be permanently flattened, but our sense of accomplishment and excitement for life is like a soaring eagle over mountains with a freshly caught mouse in its beak. jessica(bradleys GF) now calls louisville home, i can finally say that i took a 70 hr road trip, bradley is reassured of the quality of our friendship, and we now have an array of poorly taken photos in black and white film from the trip. we are hoping that because its BW it will look like real art.

this is my second go at the logo for spendyourself. lee came back to me with some good feedback, and today i have been working at creating the right balance between the image i created before, and something that will work better within his critiques.

this was the first submission for a non-profit organizations named "spendyourself"

this company exists to bring awareness and challenge to young people across the globe in different area of need. their first priority is to serve Afghanistan. in a prior post there is a tan shirt that i did for this specific project. lee hasnt given me the thumbs up yet, but i thought it was good enough to post.

i have been a long time fan of the musician Will Garrison. i find out recently through my friend Michael Winters that Garrison is now apart of a band and is coming through to play at the louisville venue the 930. i immediately downloaded the album from itunes, put my headphones on, and just listened. the album isn't a masterpiece, but Will has some of the most interesting and powerful lyrics/vocals that i can recall. riding the wave of excitement i decided to do the show poster. i ended up getting something pretty dark and mysterious, which is what i was going for, but at the end of designing the poster i did ask myself "how did i get here?" im happy with it, and i have gotten a lot of great responses from the community of poster makers at gigposters.com. i look forward to the show certaintly.

so nathan (part owner of quills coffee) didn't go for the first two quills shirts. which to be honest, i totally understand why. they are too intense. the only reason i submitted them is because i spent so much time on them, and needed to be told to drop it and move on. so once i got news that these initial two wouldn't work i started plugging away at this. i feel like this design is more accessible to a broader group of people, but still has qualities of something less accessible.

here are some shirts that i submitted to my friend nathan. he wanted some staff shirts for his coffee shop that would serve as a limited prints. this style of design is what i love the most about working. allthough i dont believe that it is my strongest point... i love working at it.

Afghanistan

this is a tshirt design for a guy named lee and is directed toward his missions work in Afghanistan. he is working with the largely over-populated people of Kabul. many are being displaced and given very little to live on, while loosing the security of the big city from the Taliban. this shirt was to meant to represent separation of two worlds. one bearing fruit from its privilege, and the other being cut off from that. living in a desolate land with tents, dirty water, and no infrastructure. i was very happy to work alongside lee to create a shirt which can hopefully help build funds to start a business centered around serving the afghan community.

here is a quick design i did for my friend marla kicklighter. she is a talented knitter and is beginning to take it more seriousely. marla loves origami cranes, and wouldnt have it anyother way but to have one represent the identity of her new business. i was happy to indulge, and we ended up with an appropriate and suiting logo.

she also knitted me an incredible face mask for biking.

i have been digging a 30 inch trench for 40 some odd feet in my front yard. with the help of 3 manly friends we spent all day saturday and sunday working digging, jackhammering, digging, and digging. it is the most intense work i have ever done. now we wait patiently for the water company to arrive and do their end of the work. it could take a while.

hopefully i can attach some pictures of the damage in a couple of days.

here is a sample of my work with a local productions company. the company is a partnership between George parker jr and Brennan clark and the name of the production company (Small Batch Productions) references one of Kentucky's many past times. The identity of SBP needed to have a parallel with bourbon packaging w/out being too overt, and also have the worn warm colors of an old propaganda poster. we both ended up being very happy with the outcome and both intend to work more together in the future.
