the parade schedule

it has been over a year since i have done a gig poster.  after all of my work in branding, making brochure, my new focus on type and layout... i really feel out of touch with making posters.  this is a sobering feeling because  it was gig posters that initially turned me on to graphic design.  my respect for certain poster makers has been re-instated.

new stuff added to my website

i looked over my work from the past year, and decided that my website was long overdue for an update.  the new material help balance out the style and quality of work that i am putting out these days. you can visit the website at pedaledesign.com

Matthews Table

Here is another logo/brochure design for a acts 29 church plant. This church is going to be planted in richmond virginia, the ninth most dangerous city in the U.S.  I attempted to bring a street art culture to the brochure, without losing any momentum with the delivery of text, and without alienating those potential supporters from the burbs... hopefully my street cred goes up a notch with this one.

new logo for pedale?

Making design for yourself is tough.  A designer will naturally progress in skill and experience changes in taste.  This makes creating a long lasting brand for yourself very difficult.  I  have always found fault in my logo, website, business cards, etc...  Which makes promoting myself impossible; for example, i may have a pocket full of business cards, but i dont like how they look anymore, so they will stay in my pocket.
With that said, i have made a attempt to create a better, hopefully more timeless logo mark for myself.  The pictures above shows what that logo would look like on a potential business card. Any comments would be sincerely considered.

quills sssssshirt

Nathan from Quills Coffee asked me to layout a new shirt for his shop using an illustration from Douglas Miller.  i am happy with how it turned out.  the psychedelic lines, hand written font, and wispy banner all work really well with Douglas's fine illustration of a deadly cobra holding tightly to one of Quills signature in-house red cups.

devotianal art

this illustration emphasizes the weight of Gods word on jeremiah as he shares very difficult/heavy revelations with israel in jeremiah 26.  we too have Gods word through scripture and need to feel the weight of its responsibility; at the same time we need to walk in the freedom of Gods word.  We need not be concerned with death, judgment, or a general fear of people, but seek first to do as God commands(which is ultimately for our good)

brooks ritter t-shirt

brooks ritter released his first album a little less then a year ago; the title of the album is "a horse fell lame".  the album seeks to express the incomparable God of scripture with a weak insufficient self.  As a response to the nature of the album, i decided to create an image that identified everyone(brooks ritter included) as "lame".
the image is off to print and will be for sale at his october 29th show with Sarah Watkins.

things of...

i spent a good part of the day drawing and scanning.  i spent more time coming up with these specific textures than you would expect.  here is a collage i put together in the progress, i feel confident that i can build onto this style more.

dont forget your lid

i have had this idea in my head for a couple of weeks... its nothing profound as you can see... infact as i was making it i had a moment of reflection.  is my purpose in life to make such things as this? i mean... this thing is pretty absurd, but nonetheless i am happy with how it turned out.  i am glad to be slowly introducing drawing into my design.
this might become a large screen print in which i would show at quills coffee.  they are working to put together a coffee-inspired print show.
i will let you know if it happens.

i wanted to experiment with some different styles of design, so i used a picture of my dad and poked around for a couple of hours.   above is the result.

water mark

this is a mark for andrew stonestreet photography.  it is going to be used for all of the usual branding items, but also as a signature to his photography.  the mark needed to be bold, simple, and intergrate with photography well.

i think its successful.

(f)art

i was asked to make some pieces of art for a proposal my friend is putting together.  this piece is called "wrath".  i have been looking toward david hockneys early artwork for ispiration.  i feel like some of his ideas and elements really came through here.  i would like to spend more time, take a group of his work, study it, and recreate more of his ideas and compositions with my own interoperation.

Guatemala/Composition

the aspect of art i most enjoy observing is composition and use of space.  i like seeing everything in its right place, allthough... i rarely know where that place is, until its put there.  i admire those who study composition and have a good explanation of how it works.  but for me, i just like spending time adjusting a piece until it feels right.
so i took a light-hearted challenge for myself.  i decided that i was going to try to crop/edit/salvage several photographs selected from the 45 photographs i took during my 2 month trip to Guatemala.  The camera i used was a Holga(basically a plastic box with a shutter) it was my first time using that type of camera and on my return, after getting the film developed... only a handful of pictures came out the way they were intended to.  The rest were a mess of collage exposures, showing only glimpses of the subject.
i enjoy how the edits turned out, and it was a joy for me to experiment with composition on photographs that remind me of many good things.
i hope you guys enjoy them aswell.

skull!

\no one ever asks me to design skulls... what.. am i not tough enough?  i decided it was time to make something really skully... so here it is.  the image might make its way to a poster some day.

logo for TRINITY

This is a logo design hasn't been accepted yet, but i thought it turned out nicely.  its bold, simple, and symbolic.
one of the cleaner, more established logo designs that i think i have done.

T-shirt

This is a art T-shirt for SpendYourself.  The tshirt highlights the work that the organization "Life In Abundance" is doing in Kenya; they specifically help orphans find homes within the community, and empower the poor in that area with grass root programs.
ironically my brother left for Sudan yesterday, and he is meeting some of these guys from this organization unrelated to my relationship with them.  weird.

my thoughts

i couldn't get this image out of my head... i was thinking about it all weekend and i had to make it.  in my mind the composition was going to work awesomely... but in creation it worked out ok.

pedale

i have been exposed to alot of different interesting design lately.  i was experimenting with type and textures.  this is my first go at it.  it pales in comparison to the quality of design i have been looking at... but i think its a good first try.

be where you are

this is a t-shirt/logo design for a slogan sojourn church is using to encourage their community.  the idea is to become more comfortable and intentional about the ordinary everyday environment that you are in.
